LOCAL 342 REPRESENTS

Welcome to the start of another new year. I hope you and your families had a wonderful holiday season.

As the new year begins, we will be dealing with several contracts that expired in 2015 and others that will expire in 2016. As you are aware, health insurance has been, and still is, the major issue at the bargaining table. We are working with our international, International Longshoremen’s Association, to try and get an alternative plan to offer members at a lesser cost while still providing a comparable level of benefits to those you currently enjoy. This is only an alternative at the bargaining table to counter-balance management’s request to contribute more money than what you are currently paying, if you pay at all. Overall, wage increases have not been generous due to the New York State tax cap, which is having a major impact on every municipality and special-use district in New York.

We have made significant improvements to our welfare package; you should be receiving a summary plan description at your homes shortly. In order to make these improvements, we no longer will be covering dependents to age 26, as we are not required to do so under the Affordable Care Act. Please note that if you have dependents ages 19-23 who are full-time students at an accredited institution, they will remain covered.

Now that our website is up and running, we have a better way of keeping you updated on events and news of importance. Please check our site regularly for the most current news.

Regards,

William M. Hennessey

President & General Manager
